A sold out crowd was on hand at the BF Coliseum Saturday evening in SE DC to witness the double header action. Slam Magazine was on the premises. DJ Stormin' Norman was pumpin the sounds as two games featuring The Family versus Drama Detailing and the main event The Goodman League All Stars versus Ball 4 Real, an offshoot of the famed And 1 team barnstorming team.
The highlight of the evening was Stephon Marbury aka Mr. Starbury coming to Washington to promote and give away 200 pairs of his new "Starbury" sneakers. The New York Knicks' point guard started his new Starbury line of affordable sneakers to be built for the masses. In this day and age of $150 and up sneakers, Marbury sought to make an affordable yet stylish shoe for everyone. " To do this was an inspiration from God. This is definitely God's work", Marbury told the crowd...
Let's get to the action on the court of the first game. The commissioner Miles Rawls called the game as The Family took on a makeshift crew from Drama Detailing but the quality of play didn't fall off. The game was close early on as both teams played hard. The Family had a nice collection of speed and power guards with a big inside finisher. Drama Detailing, not to be denied anything, battled to a 36-32 halftime lead.
In the second half, the game stayed close as guards from both teams battled each other for court supremacy. Drama Detailing held on at the end with a 82-77 hard fought victory over The Family.
In the main event, we had The Goodman League All Stars, a collection of talent from DC who with the blue and red Starbury uniforms closely resembled the road Detroit Pistons. Ball 4 Real, a team featuring former And 1 superstars Aaron "AO" Owens, "50", The Pharmacist, and "720" donned the white uniforms. If 720 sounds like a Boeing Airplane it's close because this man can take off like a Boeing jet airliner. 720 didn't get a chance to perform his signature slam dunk this evening however. The Goodman League All Stars featured cat quick guard D-Nice, Rick Ross, Omar Weaver and Nate "Sponge Bob" Burton.
Super quick guards D-Nice led the Goodman All Stars and AO led the Ball 4 Real squad. Nate Burton from the Goodman team threw down some tremendous dunks. 50 and 720 threw down some tremendous finishes from sweet passes from AO. The Goodman All Stars opened up a slight 43-39 halftime lead over Ball 4 Real.
D-Nice put constant pressure on the defense in the second half which opened up the
lane for easy dishes to Omar Weaver who threw down some incredible dunks. Omar Weaver, D-Nice, Rick Ross and Nate Burton continued to hold the lead despite an occasional highwire act from 720. 720 may have a bionic limb the way he leaps into the air.
The Goodman League All-Stars continued to hold a 62-56 lead in the second half
and control of the game when AO requested to have time put back on the clock. AO then began to exert himself with a few sweet one on one dribble moves and one spectacular take to the rim. The Pharmacist was not a factor against the Goodman defense this evening. D-Nice, not to be denied pushed the ball harder and harder. Weaver and Burton held court for the Goodman All-Stars down the stretch with some emphatic finishes.
Ball 4 Real did manage to tie the game to send it into overtime. With one minute in overtime, Ball 4 Real pulled ahead to win the game 95-92. All in all, the game was a treat for the fans of the Goodman.
