For the most part, popularity for playground ballplayers is a regional thing. But no matter what part of the country (or the world, for that matter) you’re from, no doubt you’re familiar with Waliyy “Main Event†Dixon. One of the original and signature ballers on the AND 1 Mix Tape Tour — the first AND 1 game was actually played at Waliyy’s home court in Linden, N.J. — he’s been all over the globe and all over your TV in recent years. Main was one of the guys at the forefront of starting the Ball 4 Real tour, which is in its inaugural summer run. We caught up with Main as the B4R bus was rolling from Jacksonville to Miami for Saturday’s game.Dime: You’re one of the OG’s from the AND 1 tour and a founding father of Ball4Real. How does Ball 4 Real differ from AND 1? Main Event: Like everything you have your ups and downs, but it’s nothing we can’t handle. We’re starting off fresh, you know, so we gotta get out there and sell our brand and get people familiar with us. We’re a family and we’re part owners, so that’s what makes it different from AND 1... Dime: What has been your favorite stop on tour so far? Main Event: Probably Seattle. The fans were crazy and the overall game was good. Every stop and game has been amazing. Dime: What has been the craziest highlight? Main Event: Mr. 720’s dunk. It’s crazy. Dime: Has there been any conflict or animosity between the players on the bus? Main Event: We all have our days, but at the end of the day we’re family. Ball for real, ball for life. Dime: What has been your most memorable moment? Main Event: I like interacting with the kids in different cities. Our day never stops. This is our company, Ball 4 Real. We make it an all-day thing. The action starts and it’s a block party at open run. We have guys performing; we have the Shop Boyz and we have an artist that I manage called Ft. Nox. He does our theme song; it’s called “Ball for Real, Ball for Life.†Besides all that, we really push education and bettering the community. We are like the big brothers of the ‘hood.
