ElevationMag.com - You know and we all know that the clothes don’t make the man. Yeah, but the shoes seem to be making the player. ElevationMag’s been doing a bit of homework on the ‘shoe thing’ with the help of some of the German engineers that design the k1x line. Somewhere back in the nineties, these guys along with a number of other smart companies started designing the shoe specifically for the game and the men that play the game. These things are put together with more precision and more research than probably went into the making the first electronic scoreboard. Somewhere along the line, the simple Chuck Taylor’s evolved into Air’s, Pumps, Chiefgliders, and Evolutions.
You, I and every player in every league now demand the best we can afford. Back in the crazy eighties, you could get shot for a pair of fly kicks. Now everyone just seems to have them. The pro’s don’t sweat that, they just get ‘em, and replace them just about every game these days. Weird how the original ‘Air’ Jordan’s namesake never got into that…. To satisfy this new addiction to great shoes new companies, websites and a new breed of honest to god ‘engineers’ have stepped up to answer the call. These things are now a piece of art, or science or really both I guess...
I’ve seen lines around the corner at the Foot Action across from the Garden in NYC and out the door of stores from the Nike Town on the 16th St. Mall in Denver, Foot Action in the Bricks and in the Sky Walks in Minneapolis just to get the ‘black’ ones. I’ve also seen the k1x spokesman, Ron Artest spray painting a pair of white k1x’s black just after his move to the Kings when he needed to follow the league rules on ‘team foot wear’ being the same color. So don’t feel like too much of a loser, if you did the same when you found out the ‘black’ ones were sold out. Just pretend your kicks were what the players call ‘trade shoes’ and go hit the court. Don’t worry, you’re not alone jones’en for that special color shoe; cause whatever color you want gets sold on the other coast, the coast you’re not on first, just to make you want them more. So just get them on the internet….

Anyway, back to ‘the shoe’ – they are special and probably the most important non-human aspect of the game. To get these things out and popular looks like it takes as much effort and cash as it does to design them. Getting the right shoe, the right Pro, and the right guys to wear and promote them is a big part of the shoe’s life. The guys with the swoosh snatched up some great pro’s, and the guys from k1x got Ron Artest , and a bunch of crazy streetballers from across the globe to try out and love the shoe. I like watching the whole shoe thing, at my place we have eight male feet and probably about 40 pairs of kicks, old, new, really old, and worn oncers. We also have a few pairs courtesy of Chaucey Billups, Nick Van Exel and McDyess, you know, they wore ‘em once and gave them away with the Bible quotes scribbled on the heals still intact!
