The AND1 Mix Tape Tour made it's first stop in Portland
three years ago. At that Open Run they picked up a skinny local kid by the name
of Grayson Boucher. He wowed the crowd, earned the nickname
"Professor"
from legendary Rucker Park MC Duke Tango, earned himself a contract that season from AND1, and
today is one of the most popular players on the tour. Who would have thought?
Back before Boucher had a moniker he decided to take on a
challenge. He came up to Portland from Keizer for the Open Run on a whim, just
wanting to see what he could do.
That was 2003. That was Portland's old Memorial Coliseum.
That was rapper David Banner at halftime frustrated because the sound system was
so bad no one in the crowd could understand him. That was when Boucher was known
only by his given name. That was a very warm day with a small crowd in a city
not known for streetball, yet it was a day that not only changed the teenaged
Boucher's life, but was a significant day in the history of AND1 as well.... |

His pops had played there, sharing the storied blacktop with men like Joe “The Destroyer†Hammond, Pee-Wee Kirkland and The Goat back in the 1970s. And if Kobe Bryant was truly going to make an inroad to define himself as the greatest basketball player of this generation, he had to play there, too. There, of course, is Harlem’s legendary Rucker Park. And on July 18, 2002, Kobe came to play. Because these days, respect earned on the playground can be just as vital as respect earned in front of 20,000 paying customers. Or, as Greg Marius, CEO of the Entertainers Basketball Classic at Rucker Park, puts it: “[Kobe] needed street cred, and this is the best place to get street cred.â€
“I wanted the challenge of taking on the best that don’t play in the NBA,†Kobe says about his visit. So it was arranged that Kobe would play one game with Murder Inc., the team owned by record label boss Irv Gotti. On July 15, the day of Kobe’s original scheduled appearance, word spread around New York quickly, and a massive line started to form at 1:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. tip-off... |

When AND1 approached Waliyy "Main Event" Dixon to
assemble a group of streetballers to help in making the second version of the
popular AND1 Mix Tape, Dixon never thought the event would become a summer-long
tour showcasing the best talent not in the NBA.
At this year's first Tour Stop in Los Angeles,
Dixon reflected on what has now become an incredibly popular draw as a worldwide
phenomenon - "this just shows my hard work in being one of the founders of the
tour," he said. "Now we're bringing in guys that have aspirations to get
into the NBA, play overseas or in the NBDL, and it all has become a stepping
stone for guys to make it big someday."... |

The camera crews were in place Thursday night at the Mann's Chinese Theater. The papparrazzi were ready, standing alongside the red carpet, eager to get a snapshot of the next celebrity.
With the commotion, one might have thought Hollywood was playing host to the premiere of the latest big-budget, summertime blockbuster.
In a way, it was.
The celebration was held to announce a new season of "Street Ball," a hip-hop version of the Harlem Globetrotters that is a blend of pickup basketball and caffeine. Lots of caffeine.
In the past few years the sport has gone from inner-city curiosity to mainstream colossus, a $150 million-a-year multi-media industry fueled by a popular series on ESPN, video sales and a cover story in Sports Illustrated.
In addition, the AND1 Street Ball videogame will be released nationwide Tuesday on PlayStation 2 and X-Box, a clear representation of the phenomenon's rise in pop culture.
"The revolution is being televised and people are coming out of the woodwork to see the amazing things these guys can do on the court," said Mandy Murphy, spokesperson for AND1, a sneaker and apparel company that is underwriting the sport...

ElevationMag: Can you please introduce yourself to anyone who does not know who Cory Underwood is yet?
Cory Underwood: ElevationMag... world, Cory Underwood aka C-Wood aka The Undertaker aka "Money On the Wood Make the Game Go good." 6-foot-10, 240 pounds, lefty, best big man in NYC, period!. Best scoring big man in the city, period!. Out of town they call me "Young DC", and I'm talking Syracuse/NJ Nets Derrick Coleman. I can do it all; dribble, shoot, rebound, block shots, and I shoot that NBA three now. Yeah, it's serious!!
What would you say is the strongest point of your game?
My height, being a lefty is a major plus. I'm very mobile. I can do a lot of things with the ball. Skilled. Great footwork, but that lost art of scoring in the post is where I'll always win, and no I'm not talking about putting your head down and throwing up a shot. I'm talking reverse pivots, step-through's, etc. Mid-post, mid-range jumper. I'll even pull you out on the wing... give me too much room, jumper. You press up, bye-bye. Yes, this is what I do, ask around! Last summer there wasn't too many games where I didn't have 20 and up... |
